On August 28 and 29, researchers and faculty from two major scientific communities at Université Paris Cité gathered at the Manoir de Gressy for a founding retreat firmly focused on the future: that of the new Graduate School in Cardiovascular & Blood Sciences (CVBS). The event was both convivial and strategic, marking an important step in structuring teaching and research in cardiovascular and hematological sciences at Paris Cité.
An Expanded Graduate School, a Shared Heart and Blood
Born from the transformation of the Graduate School Cardiovascular Sciences, the CVBS Graduate School now fully incorporates hematology alongside its existing focus. In practical terms, this evolution brings together two communities that had until now worked in parallel: InIdex CITY, led by the IHM des Sciences Cardiovasculaires, and InIdex GR-Ex, dedicated to red blood cells, notably including the GRBioT Master’s program (Red Blood Cell and Transfusion Biology), which now joins the new Graduate School alongside the Master’s in Cardiovascular Sciences.
The ambition is clear: to offer students an innovative, cross-disciplinary approach to the circulatory system, exploring the interactions between the heart, blood vessels, and blood components (red blood cells, platelets, leukocytes), from molecular physiology through to the most advanced clinical approaches.
Two Days to Meet, Exchange, and Build Together
Friday afternoon was devoted to mutual discovery between the two communities. On the InIdex CITY side, Jean-Sébastien Silvestre presented the network, followed by the IHM des Sciences Cardiovasculaires (Elisa Rossi, Feriel Azibani, Nicolas Vodovar) and then the Master’s in Cardiovascular Sciences (Giuseppina Caligiuri, Dorothée Faille, Jean-Sébastien Silvestre), who presented their initiatives and roadmap. On the InIdex GR-Ex side, Olivier Hermine opened the discussions, followed by presentations on the GRBioT Master’s program (Caroline Le Van Kim), GR-Ex’s national and international training programs (Awa Ndour, Caroline Le Van Kim), the links between red blood cells and the cardiovascular system (Olivier Hermine), and cardiovascular and thrombo-vascular involvement in sickle cell disease (Bérengère Koehl) — all concrete illustrations of the scientific bridges already connecting the two disciplines. The evening continued with a convivial dinner followed by team-building activities, in a warm atmosphere conducive to new collaborations.
Saturday morning was devoted to collective work: three round tables brought participants together around the major projects of the new Graduate School:
- integrating course offerings, with a joint Master’s program on the horizon;
- internationalization and the development of partnerships;
- revitalizing research at the interface between CITY and GR-Ex, in order to attract top talent and strengthen doctoral training, with reflection already underway on the next Summer School in 2027.
The morning concluded with a collective debrief, the identification of areas of convergence, and an initial roadmap for the months ahead.
A Shared Momentum for the Future
This founding retreat perfectly illustrates the spirit driving the new Graduate School in Cardiovascular & Blood Sciences: bringing together the driving forces of cardiovascular and hematological research at Université Paris Cité to better train, better innovate, and carry greater weight on the national and international scientific stage. A commitment has already been made to bring the shared ambitions from these two days to life in the coming months — and to hold the next Summer School in 2027!
